Background and Context - This project, named "TARAhaat" after the all-purpose haat (meaning a village bazaar), comprises a commercially viable model for bringing relevant information, products and services via the Internet to the unserved rural market of India from which an estimated 50% of the national income is derived.

The Development Alternatives Group promotes TARAhaat, and its early alliance partners include Hughes Escorts Communication, KLG Systel, jaldi.com, James Martin, Hewlett Packard, Oracle, and the Global Development Gateway (sponsored by the World Bank and the Gates Foundation). Excelsior Ventures Management LLC and James Martin & Co are providing initial equity capital together with management and operational resources.

In its goal to connect rural India to the Internet and promote livelihood generation through e-commerce and access to information, TARAhaat.com faced the fundamental problem: connecting rural villages to the World Wide Web in the first place. Many villages in the Bundelkhand region where TARAhaat is in its pilot phase do not have access to telephone lines. They had to come up with an alternative - using VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) technology.

  Rural Knowledge Centres-ICT for Poverty Eradication 

  Laos: Our Remote IT Village project responds to villagers express needs for telecommunications, business opportunities, and enhanced education for their children through the development of a solid-state, low-wattage computer that can be powered by a foot-crank, a high-bandwidth wireless network, and support for village small businesses. Jhai Foundation is developing:

- A rugged computer and printer assembled from off-the-shelf components that draws less than 20 watts in normal use - less than 70 watts when the printer is printing - and that can survive dirt, heat, and immersion in water

- A wireless Local Area Network with relay stations based on the 802.11b protocol, which will transmit signals between the villages and a server located at the Phon Hong Hospital for switching to the Internet or the Lao telephone system
