Key Words:grassroot female leadership in community development Summary:Mother Centers are a grassroot self-help women4s movement in Germany claiming public space for the interests of community women and children and developing new channels of participation in the communities, based on life experience in the families and in neighborhoods. Public housing and urban planning should include consultations with mother centers and other neighborhood groups to receive the verdict "child and family friendly" before construction begins. Mother centers re-create neighborhood structures and neighborhood services that industrialisation and modernisation tend to dry out and are an innovative model of how to strengthen civil society in the North.
