About City & Shelter
City & Shelter is a non-profit organisation, whose
initial projects concern the incorporation of gender issues into all aspects of decision
making in the fields of town planning, transport, urban safety and habitat. City &
Shelter has coordinated three research actions for the Commission of the European
Communities (Equal Opportunities Unit - DGV). The work of the European team involved in
the project resulted in the publication of a "European
Charter for Women in the City" in 1994 in thirteen different languages. This
document is included on the CD-ROM City, Citizenship and Gender.
The Charter is viewed as a lasting and open analytical process containing a series of concrete proposals which might be put into practice in order to take into account and to promote increasingly active citizenship by women in regional and town planning as a whole. One of the presuppositions is that a woman's self-interest does not exist as such, but that women may act as catalysts in the process of change and of improvements of living conditions of all concerned. The aim of this Charter is to promote a more liberated society, free from all stereotypes which hinder any development in town planning and services, housing, safety and mobility.
In January 1998, City & Shelter produced a CD-Rom gathering thousands of pages of ideas, experiences, studies axed on gender issues in the fields of the habitat and development. The CD-Rom is structured in six main themes : Equal opportunities, Micro-credits, Habitat and cities, Appropriate technologies, les Eco-villages, Development-environment. This CD-Rom was realized with the support of the UNESCO and of the French Community of Belgium.
Since 1998, in collaboration with the french association "Les Traboules" , City & Shelter takes part in the setting-up of a European Profeminist Men's Network, in the framework of a project supported by the European Commission (Equal Opportunities Unit). The network now has a Website , http://www.europrofem.org, a trimestrial newsletter and has produced a CD-Rom (June 98), gathering international contributions, articles, books, thesis, reports,...either old or more recent, which deals with issues like men and masculinity, violence against women and children, homophobia, patriarchy, the culture of peace...
